U14 York Open Tournament and Invitational Team Event
16th and 17th May 2015
On Saturday six of our U14 players, Jasmin, Ella, Hritika, Eve, Tom C and Martin, travelled up to York with various parents in tow, to take part in the Open tournament. This proved to be a tough competition for all, although Eve, Tom and Martin did win their group games to go through to the next stage of the competition. Tom came up against a ‘giant’ from Lothian, he fought hard but unfortunately lost the battle. Martin also lost out to a tough opponent from Scotland who was the eventual winner. Eve played probably her best game of the day in the next round against the number one seed only narrowly missing out on taking the match to a deciding game! Well done to all six!!
Sunday saw the rest of the team, Jolie, Mia, Daniel, Nial, Marcus and Harry, arrive for the team event…..with even more parents!
After a team warm up, led by Eve, the managers were called to the desk to be told the format for the day….which was not what we were expecting or planned for!! The matches were to be decided over 15 rubbers with all the players playing a level doubles each plus singles or mixed. Lots of badminton!!
First up was Yorkshire, after a clean sweep in the doubles, Yorkshire came back to win all the boys singles, our girls won all of their singles as did all the mixed pairings. Final score 12-3 win to Leicestershire.
Surrey was next…this one looked a bit trickier. We won 4 of the doubles and half of the singles, we needed to win 1 more in the final 3 mixed games…we won 2. Final score 9-6 win to Leicestershire.
Next up, Cheshire, and we’d just found out that they had beaten the mighty Lothian (8-7), so guessed it would be tough! After the doubles, going in to the singles, the scores were even, 3 each, but we lost out 2-4 in the singles which meant we needed to win all 3 mixed to win the match, unfortunately, we only won 2. Final score 8-7 win to Cheshire.
Next match was a local derby for us against Nottinghamshire. We quickly went into the lead winning 5 of the doubles and after the singles had won the match. Final score 11-4 win to Leicestershire.
Our final match was against Lothian and we knew by now that we would be coming home with a medal…would it be silver or bronze? A hurried ‘team talk’ took place to refocus the team before we got on with the match! After the doubles we were in the lead, winning 4, but only managed to win 1 of the singles….the score was Lothian 7 Leicestershire 5…we had to win all 3 mixed to win the match. Our second pair finished first winning their match easily to single figure, our first pair followed them winning a tight close fought match to 18…it was down to the nerves of our third pair as to whether they could take the final game…another nail biting finish they won to 16!! Final score 8-7 win to Leicestershire.
Each and every one of the team played a key role in this event, ALL tried hard, ALL were successful and NO-ONE gave up! Team spirit was great! Very well done to you ALL on winning Silver!!
