Another busy weekend’s badminton for the under 12yrs with a double header up at the York Railway Institute – and what a turn out it was!
Emma Thornley, Evie Pike, Eve Durrance, Sophie Watson, Tilly Dale, Grace Sherwin, Georgina Brembridge, Lewis Whyley, Owen King and Luke Hoult entered the Yorkshire U12 Open event on the Saturday, then while some returned home for a well-earned rest, another contingent of players joined on the Sunday: Emily Gallacher, Ayush Panchal, Mitesh Chauhan and Tom Platzer joined the others to represent Leicestershire in the team event.
There were some great results from Saturday’s Open event led by a fantastic gold in the girls’ doubles for Eve and Sophie. Sophie also won silver in the girls singles and Eve a bronze. Owen and Luke won silver in the boys’ doubles, just losing out in the final 21- 19. Luke achieved his second silver medal in the singles. Other notable results saw Tilly Dale and Evie Pike win their group rounds in the girls’ singles to reach the quarter-finals and a special mention too for Grace Sherwin who ‘manned up’ and did well to play at all after a nasty fall left her bruised and battered on Friday evening. All the players showed their true Leicester grit, playing to the best of their ability and all should be proud of their results.
After a spot of team bonding over a meal on Saturday evening, Sunday morning dawned and it was time for the team tournament. Leicestershire started out of the blocks well in the first round, notching up easy wins against Notts, Cheshire and Yorkshire 2, which put us into the top half of the tournament to play Yorkshire 1 and Surrey for the medal positions. These were two very closely fought matches which unfortunately went with the opposition with both matches ending 3-4. The team ended the day with a well-deserved bronze medal.
Thanks to all the players; they all tried their very best and it was a great team effort!
And a big thanks to the parents for their support.
