The first Shires match of the season for the under 14’s against Derbyshire turned out to be a very good start to the season.
Luke Hoult, Owen King, Ayush Panchal, Lewis Whyley, Eve Durrance, Sophie Watson, Tilly Dale, Evie Pike, Grace Sherwin
We had a couple of tired players and parents after competing in a tournament the day before. We also had a few nervous players as this was their first Shires match for Leicestershire.
The team looked very smart in their new county shirts which were kindly donated by Leicester and Rutland sport. We started the day with Ayush (nominated captain for the day) encouraging the players in their warm up, which the PC coaches will be pleased to hear; then came his usual quote for the day “the harder the journey the better the destination” – make of that what you will!
Then to the match , we started with the mixed doubles taking all 4 games, then the same with the singles. The team continued to do well against a much weaker Derbyshire side, taking all the remaining games with the final score 20-0. It can be quite difficult to keep focused in matches like this but the Leicestershire players kept their focus, respected their opponents and showed good sportsmanship throughout the whole match.
The only incident in the match came from Luke, when we all thought the day had come when he would injure himself from all his diving around the court! But it turned out that he had tripped over his own feet moving to the back of the court and landed awkwardly on his shoulder but thank goodness recovered quickly.
I thought the kids might like to be competitive against each other so I have created a challenge. I have looked at the points given away in the singles only; the boys gave away 54 points and the girls 58! This could be interesting at the end of the season! Especially now they know about it.
Well done to all the team a great start to the season.
